The relationship of perfectionism and psychological distress and coping strategies of endurance athletes

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of perfectionism on psychological distress and coping strategies of endurance athletes. The present research was applied in terms of purpose and descriptive in terms of research. The statistical population of this study was all 18 to 25 years old male and female athletes in endurance sports of East Azerbaijan province that participated in official national or international competitions for at least two years. 200 athletes were selected by available sampling. To collect information three questionnaires of sports perfectionism of Tri-short et al. (1990), Kessler (2002) psychological distress questionnaire and coping strategies questionnaire of Lazarus and Folkman (1988) were used. For testing the hypotheses of this research, Pearson correlation and regression analysis were used in SPSS25 software. The results showed that sport perfectionism has a significant relation with psychological distress and coping strategies of endurance athletes. There is a negative relation between positive sport perfectionism with psychological distress, and a positive relation between negative sport perfectionism with psychological distress of athletes. Also, there is a positive relation between psitive sport perfectionism with coping strategies, and a negative, reverse and significant relation between negative sport perfectionism with coping strategies of endurance athletes.
