Relationship between teachers' interpersonal behaviors with motivational regulations and stages of change in online physical education

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between teachers' interpersonal behaviors with motivational regulations and the stages of exercise behavior change in physical education class with a virtual education system during the Corona era. Therefore, 318 students (274 girls and 44 boys) from Urmia city were selected as an available sample during the Corona period. They completed, Interpersonal Behaviors Questionnaire (IBQ), Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ), and Stages of Exercise Behavior Change Questionnaire (SEBCQ). In order to investigate the relationship between teachers' interpersonal behaviors with motivational regulations, age and socio-economic status from Pearson's correlation coefficient and the relationship between teachers' interpersonal behaviors and students' motivational indicators with stages of exercise behavior change from Spearman's correlation coefficient, also from MANOVA analysis to investigate the difference between girls and boys in the main research variables were used. Finally, multiple discriminates analysis was used to predict the predictive power of the criterion variable (stages of exercise behavior change) by predictor variables (teachers' motivational regulations and interpersonal behaviors) with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed the importance and role of autonomous motivation in the stages of behavior change in online physical education class. In fact, physical education teachers can by creating communication structures that support the needs in the physical education class, such as encouraging initiative and initiative, allowing participation in decision-making, providing the right to choose with students' goals and values, providing specific and constructive feedback, in involving students more in Physical education classes become effective.
