Abstract

Goal Orientation in girls Athletes: Predictive Role of Self-Esteem and Mental toughness

Abstract

The current study aimed to investigate the predictive role of psychological hardiness and self-esteem on goal orientation in sports among girls dormitory residents at Tabriz University. The research employed a descriptive-correlational design. The population comprised all girls residents of the Shohada Dormitory at Tabriz University in 2023, from which 180 People were selected through purposive sampling. Data collection instruments included questionnaires on goal orientation in sports, Ahvaz's Psychological Hardiness, and Rosenberg's Self-Esteem. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and multiple regression analysis. The regression analysis findings indicated that as psychological hardiness increased, task-oriented orientation increased, while ego-oriented orientation decreased. Additionally, an increase in self-esteem was associated with an increase in task-oriented orientation. In other words, students with higher levels of psychological hardiness tended to be more inclined towards directly and purposefully pursuing their sports goals, and an increase in self-esteem could further enhance this inclination.
