Abstract

The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between mood states and decision-making styles, with the mediating role of working memory in athletes of Zanjan in 2023. The statistical population of the study included all male and female athletes in individual and team sports in Zanjan. Using convenience sampling, 245 individuals were selected as the statistical sample. The selected athletes competed in Taekwondo, Karate, Table Tennis, and Badminton (individual sports) and Futsal, Volleyball, Handball, and Basketball (team sports), and had been active in sports for 3 to 7 years. The athletes' working memory was measured using the Wechsler Working Memory Assessment software. Subsequently, the participants completed Scott and Bruce's General Decision-Making Style Questionnaire and the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) questionnaire. The results of data analysis indicated a significant effect of depression, happiness, anger, and confusion on working memory. Furthermore, a significant effect of working memory on rational, dependent, intuitive, and avoidant decision-making styles was demonstrated. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that working memory plays a mediating role in the relationship between decision-making styles and mood states in athletes.
