The Effect of Music on Postural Sway in Male Bodybuilders: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract

Bodybuilding, as a resistance-based sport, poses challenges to postural control and balance, potentially increasing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Music, known for its effects on neural and sensory systems, may serve as a non-pharmacological method to improve balance. This study investigated the impact of music on postural sway in male bodybuilders. Using a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design with a control group, thirty male bodybuilders were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. Postural stability was assessed using the Biodex Balance System, measuring the Overall Stability Index (OSI), Anterior-Posterior Stability Index (APSI), and Medial-Lateral Stability Index (MLSI). The experimental group completed balance tests while listening to music, whereas the control group performed the tests in silence. Mixed ANOVA results showed that music significantly reduced postural sway and improved balance measures. These findings suggest that music can be an effective complementary tool in bodybuilding training programs to enhance postural stability.
