Abstract

Adolescent female athletes face unique challenges due to developmental transitions, social expectations, and competitive pressures, which can negatively impact their psychological well-being. Mindfulness has emerged as an effective approach for enhancing mental health resources. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness skills training on psychological well-being and its six components, including self-acceptance, environmental mastery, positive relations, purpose in life, personal growth, and autonomy among adolescent female athletes. This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest control group design. The statistical population comprised adolescent female athletes aged 15 to 18 years in martial arts disciplines in Qom. A total of 30 participants were purposefully selected and randomly assigned to the experimental and the control group. The experimental group received eight sessions of mindfulness skills training, while the control group received no intervention. The Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale short form was administered at pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis of covariance. The findings revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the total psychological well-being score after controlling for pretest scores with a large effect size. Mindfulness skills training also had a significant positive effect on all six components of psychological well-being, with effect sizes ranging from 0.22 to 0.30, indicating moderate to large practical significance. Mindfulness skills training is an effective method for enhancing psychological well-being among adolescent female athletes. Integrating these training programs into athletic and support curricula can significantly improve mental health, self-acceptance, positive relationships, purposefulness, personal growth, and autonomy in this population.
