Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of linear and non-linear karate training on the attention networks of teenage male karatekas.
Method: The research method was a semi-experimental type with a pre-test-post-test design, where 24 karate kai beginners were selected as available and randomly assigned to two experimental groups and a control group. Both groups trained according to their training protocol for 12 weeks and 3 sessions every week. Before and after the training course, the test of attention networks was checked.
Findings: The results showed that linear training leads to a change in the total average (p=0.001) and the executive control network of attention (p=0.01). Non-linear training also led to the improvement of the executive control network of attention (p=0.01). However, there was no statistically significant difference in any of the groups in the alerting (p=0.87) and orientating network (p=0.76) as a result of the training.
Discussion and conclusion: The results obtained were explained by using the theories of information processing in linear education and dynamic systems in non-linear education in problem solving, conflict resolution and response planning.
