The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive role of sport imagery ability dimensions in the development of psychological skills among elite athletes. Although previous research has highlighted the importance of imagery in athletic performance, limited evidence exists regarding how specific dimensions of imagery distinctly predict foundational, psychophysiological, and cognitive skills. A total of 255 elite male and female athletes voluntarily completed the Mental Skills Questionnaire-3 and the Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire (SIAQ). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple linear regression. The results indicated that emotional imagery was the strongest predictor of foundational skills, while both emotional and mastery imagery enhanced psychophysiological skills, with strategic imagery showing an unexpected negative effect. Furthermore, goal imagery emerged as the most powerful predictor of cognitive skills, whereas mastery imagery revealed a weak negative association. These findings suggest that different imagery dimensions play distinct roles in shaping psychological skills, emphasizing that emotional and goal-focused imagery are more effective than other forms. Accordingly, psychological interventions for elite athletes should be tailored to the target skill, with a particular focus on emotional and goal imagery, to enhance performance and improve psychological resilience under competitive stress.
