In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to having a muscular body among men, and bodybuilding exercises have become more popular as a means of achieving an ideal body image. However, some bodybuilders develop a pathological preoccupation with their muscles. Muscle dysmorphia is a subtype of body dysmorphic disorder and is observed in men who believe that their bodies are small and weak. Several psychological and social factors are associated with the risk of developing this disorder. The aim of the present study was to predict muscle dysmorphia perception based on attachment styles and sociocultural pressure among male bodybuilders in the city of Yazd. The research method was descriptive-correlational, and the statistical population consisted of all male bodybuilders in Yazd in 2020, from whom 120 participants were selected using convenience sampling. The research instruments included the Adult Attachment Styles Questionnaire (Besharat), the Muscle Dysmorphia Questionnaire (Schlundt et al.), and the Perceived Sociocultural Pressure Questionnaire (Stice et al.). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and regression analysis. The results of Pearson correlation showed that muscle dysmorphia was positively and significantly associated with anxious attachment style, avoidant attachment style, and sociocultural pressure (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the results of stepwise regression analysis indicated that these three variables significantly predicted muscle dysmorphia perception and jointly explained 71% of the variance in this variable. Among the predictor variables, anxious attachment style was the strongest predictor of muscle dysmorphia. Overall, the findings suggest that a combination of individual and social factors plays an important role in the perception of muscle dysmorphia.
