This study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of early maladaptive schemas and gendered cognitive patterns among Iranian athletes, with a specific focus on Kurdistan Province. Early maladaptive schemas, as enduring cognitive structures, are activated under stressful and competitive conditions and can influence emotional regulation, motivation, and decision-making in sports contexts. The study adopted a descriptive–correlational design, involving 366 male and female athletes recruited from sports clubs in Kurdistan Province through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the 75-item Short Form of Young’s Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-SF75). Statistical analyses included the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and Scheffé post hoc tests. Results indicated that female athletes scored higher on the schemas of self-sacrifice, subjugation, and undeveloped self, whereas male athletes scored higher on emotional inhibition, unrelenting standards, and perfectionism. Additionally, sport type (team vs. individual) and level of competition significantly affected schema patterns (p < .01). These findings suggest that cognitive–emotional differences between male and female athletes are shaped not only by individual traits but also by social roles, competitive expectations, and cultural norms within the social context of Kurdistan. The results are consistent with international studies highlighting gendered schema activation in performance settings, while also emphasizing context-specific variations observed in collectivist societies. Accordingly, schema-focused psychological interventions that integrate gender-sensitive and contextually adapted approaches are recommended to enhance athletes’ mental health and performance. The study contributes to the growing body of literature linking schema theory with sports psychology in non-Western settings, underscoring the importance of cultural adaptation in cognitive–behavioral frameworks.
